Services & Fees
My practice is mostly individual therapy (conducted virtually). Typically, our time together would be for 50 minutes. This is your time.
Our work would begin by developing a careful understanding of the nature of struggles and your strengths. Once we have an understanding, we will use ways of talking that meet your needs and are consistent with the modern science and art of psychotherapy.
Fees
I charge $40 per "50-minute" hour for individual or $50 for couple sessions. Fees are due at the time of service. Insurance coverage, if relevant, is between you and any third party payor (insurance company).
I charge a modest fee because I want to provide a service to people who otherwise may not be able to access counseling. This puts our shared time in our hands and not in the hands of an insurance company. I will provide documentation of service and payment if needed.
About Psychotherapy
My practice integrates the art and science of contemporary psychotherapy. The work is highly individualized and may address problems ranging from problem solving-and skill development to anxiety, depression, and trauma.
We will develop a shared understanding what you want to work on (goals) as well as a clear collaboration on how we will work together (methods).
Details of my approach to therapy are available in the “Resources” section of this site.

Contacting me.
Phone: Please feel free to contact me by phone at 315.645.2971. It is most likely that I will not answer the first time you call. I have received far too many spam and prank calls, and the best response to those is to not answer. I am sorry for the obvious inconvenience of this. However, if you leave a voice message, I will return your call immediately or within several hours. Please include your name, your number, and a brief message about the nature of your call.
Email: Email is a convenient way to reach me. I will check drjamills@yahoo.com daily. I will reply within 1 work day. It helps if you leave information to help me understand the nature of your message.
Access - I am working via telehealth only. We will have an arrangement that easily and securely permits us to work via audio/video platform. You will need a comfortable and safe place from which you can participate.
Dr. Mills’ Professional Background
Academic Background. I earned my B.A. with Distinction in Psychology from the University of Delaware in 1978. He continued at UD to finish an M.Ed. in Counseling in 1980. I worked in and out of the field until 1983, at which time I enrolled in doctoral studies at Purdue University. Despite success and enjoyment there, the program was not a good match for my goals. I transferred to the State University of New York at Buffalo, where I completed the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in November of 1987 (because of administrative procedures at the time, my degree does not officially appear until June of 1988).
I later completed an MS in Sport Science, a BA in Music, and an MA in Music Performance.
Professional Roles. Since completing my bachelor’s degree, I have worked in many professional contexts. A complete listing of my work is available in the Resources Section of this webpage under “CV.” My roles were mostly as a clinician or educator, including decades of full and/or part-time practice. I have also been involved in professional scholarship and service.
